MLLT’s acquisition of 134 acres in early October is important for many reasons. It connects our existing parcels, expands the protected area, and gives the organization the ability to create a future seven mile trail network for all to enjoy!

The finalizing of the land purchase also marks a turning point, not an ending. Our fundraising campaign continues, and is critical going forward. We funded the cost of the land purchase with 60% coming from generous donations from our dedicated donors and the other 40% from our operating budget funds, which we need to replenish. Acquiring land is only one part of conservation. The work that follows, including ongoing land management, educational activites for our students in Washington County and paying local taxes, all depend on steady community support. Consider supporting our mission at MLLT!

The 134-acre acquisition strengthens a larger conservation vision

The newest 134 acres join the existing MLLT parcels, creating a more complete and useful protected area. In land conservation, this kind of expansion often brings benefits that go beyond the size of the purchase.

Wildlife does not move according to property boundaries. Water does not stop at a survey line. Seeds, pollinators, seasonal drainage, nesting areas, forest edges, and meadow openings all relate to one another. When protected land is broken into fragments, those systems can be harder to sustain.

By adding land that joins existing parcels, MLLT reduces fragmentation and protects more of the natural patterns already present on the site. Scenic views are preserved, habitats are further buffered with Riparian Forest Buffers and there is now a cool quarry to explore!

The title says the key fact clearly: MLLT Acquires 134 Acres to Join Existing Parcels as Fundraising Continues. Our campaign now turns toward lasting stewardship of these spectacular lands and we hope you join us!
