Riparian Forest Buffers

Riparian Forest Buffers are natural or restored woodlands located alongside streams, lakes, and wetlands. The forests of MLLT serve as a riparian buffer for our lake. Let's work together to create buffers and keep Meddybemps Lake healthy!

These buffers typically include plantings of trees, shrubs, and grasses that are managed to improve and safeguard aquatic resources from negative effects due to the management of nearby lands. Riparian Forest Buffers capture sediment, nutrients, pesticides, and other substances in surface runoff and shallow subsurface water flow, preventing them from entering streams, lakes, or wetlands. Shade from trees along the banks helps maintain temperatures in cold water streams. Additionally, woody vegetation minimizes bank erosion by absorbing wave energy and securing the soil with their roots.
