On May 22nd, we welcomed back the Woodland Elementary students, grades 2, 3, and 5th for a second year of American Chestnut Tree planting at MLLT. Our forester, Brittany Mauricette and Eva Butler, from the Maine Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation (ME-TACF), shared many interesting facts about the history and fate of the American Chestnut Tree and how to plant them for the best restoration efforts. Students also shared some of their thoughts about the morning in the quick video below.

MLLT extends heartfelt thanks to the amazing Woodland staff, the bus driver, and the countless volunteer hours that helped make Team Chestnut 2026 such a memorable experience for the students.

After a morning of planting, the students returned with two Chestnut trees that will now grow at Woodland Elementary School. Be sure to visit the Woodland Elementary School and MLLT Facebook pages to see more delightful photos from this truly special day!

And stay connected—As Woodland's High School students will be returning to MLLT on May 28th for their second year of conducting health and growth measurements for trees in the 2025 Chestnut Grove.

Below are a few of our favorite moments from a truly magical morning spent planting trees with incredible kids. To learn more about the American Chestnut Restoration Project, visit the American Chestnut Foundation at The American Chestnut Foundation | Rooted in Restoration.
